Startup Genome and Global Entrepreneurship Network, which conduct global entrepreneurship research, published the “2022 Global Startup Ecosystems Report” (GSER). Among the “Global Emerging Ecosystems,” Istanbul rose to 14th place, having created a total of $17 billion in ecosystem value over the past 2.5 years.
The GSER 2022 report was publicized during London Technology Week. The Istanbul Development Agency (ISTKA), which is a member of Startup Genome on behalf of Istanbul, contributed to the report with its data and expert opinions. The report lists 140 of the world's leading ecosystems, including classifications based on regional assessments and opinions of the experts in the field.
Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank commented on Istanbul's enhancing performance in entrepreneurship: "The last decade has witnessed the rise of a resilient, attractive, and rapidly evolving startup ecosystem in Istanbul. Out of this dynamism, Istanbul will emerge as a leading attraction spot for global technology startups."
According to the GSER 2022 report, Istanbul has become prominent in gaming, AI, big data and analytics, and fintech sectors in terms of talent, support resources, and startup events. Istanbul was among the top 10 European Ecosystems in “Affordable Talent,” which measures the capacity to employ cost-effective skilled personnel in startups. Global connections, talent pool, and supporting network structures were shown as the key determinants of the startups' tendencies to prefer Istanbul.
"Our agency has been working to make Istanbul an entrepreneurial city since its establishment. We are really proud to see the result of our work in international reports as well. We will continue to support our startups to the best of our abilities," said Erkam Tüzgen, Secretary General of Istanbul Development Agency (ISTKA), in the GSER 2022 report.
"Startup Genome is thrilled to see more and more global startup success stories born out of Istanbul. Marc Penzel, the Founder and President of Startup Genome, states and adds: “The on-demand delivery company Getir is a great example, but there is so much more happening. The dedication of the Istanbul Development Agency helped place Istanbul as a Top 15 Emerging Ecosystem."
GSER stands out as one of the world's most comprehensive research in entrepreneurship with its 280 innovative entrepreneurial ecosystems and 3 million startups analyses.
